About Us

Who are we?

Shereen: I came up with the idea for this blog when my friend Kit and I were cafe hopping one day 🙂 We love to eat and try out new food places but our food choices are always defined (not limited) by two things: a) is it halal and b) are there vegetarian options? I‘m very particular about where I eat because of my religious dietary restrictions and for many years, my friend Kit has been very accommodating and tolerant of it. Now, we also take into account her vegetarian needs. Over the years, we’ve uncovered many different food places and options for Muslims and vegetarians, and basically, anyone who really needs an alternative food choice. While it is not that easy to find these options, it isn’t impossible either and I’d love to share my discoveries with you!

Kit: This blog is a testament to our love of food, coffee, and cakes. Ever since I converted to a pescetarian diet two years ago, and then gradually to a vegetarian diet since last December, our food exploring adventures became more challenging because we have to find eateries that cater to both of our dietary requirements. I know it isn’t easy being vegetarian in Singapore where eating is a national hobby, and I want to give as much help and support to fellow vegetarians as I can. I will try to compare the vegetarian food I tasted –not only within vegetarian eateries –but also, with my memory of non-vegetarian food from my meat-eating past. So, good luck to all of us vegetarians!

Why did we create this blog?

Being a Muslim (Shereen) and a vegetarian (Kit) in Singapore, we’ve come to realise that we have to take extra time and caution when we head out to dine. We often do extensive research on the place that we’re going to and when we do head there, we always ask extra questions to double check and make sure our dietary requirements are met. The idea for this bog stemmed from wanting to provide readers with

a) more halal options so that they can feel safe eating at said establishments

b) alternative options for vegetarians when dining at non-vegetarian places

We’ve come to realise that while it is not easy to find a wide variety of halal or vegetarian options, it is not that difficult either 🙂 If you have any places you’d like us to check out, drop us an email at thealternativefoodblog@gmail.com.

Disclaimer: Please read our tags to see if the restaurant we are writing about is halal / vegetarian / non-vegetarian. Thank you.

Hi! I love your reviews!! You guys should check out Vegan Burg! Not sure if it’s halal but it’s definitely vegetarian! Check out the website > http://www.veganburg.com I’d love to see you guys do a review of this place! 😀

PS: I love the idea of your blog, vegetarian and halal. I can totally relate because I’m Muslim and my best friend isn’t. So we too often face the same problem!

      Hi Fayidah,

Thank you for the encouragment! We are glad you enjoy our blog, and that we are able to help you and your best friend when it comes to deciding where to eat. 😉

Thanks for the suggestion of reviewing Veganburg. I (Kit) am a huge fan of the vegan franchise and I have tried almost every item on their menu. In fact, I have been patronising them since they opned their first outlet in Eunos. It is a pity that it is not certified Halal even though it serves vegan food and does not use or serve alcohol in their premises.

Thanks for the suggestion once again. We will be reviewing it soon when they launch a seasonal burger.

Once again, we are glad you enjoy our blog!
